On Kirk's side of the family...well, Kate has a son and daughter so there was no kind of firsts for us to have. We're psyched!

A Mind of My Own - by Joanna

What does a lion say?

I'm writing this entry about myself for once, not Mommy writing about me. I have a mind of my own and my own ideas and want to share them with the world. So now that Mommy has finally fallen asleep (she only cried for 4 minutes) I've pulled myself up to the computer and I want to tell you about Mommy and my trip to the mall yesterday.

We went to the mall to get my picture taken at Picture People for a picture contest and because Mom could get a free picture with a coupon. I slept the whole way there in the car, it's great to have a chaufeur to take me wherever I want to go. But you know what, I wasn't really in the mood to have my picture taken. I know you all think I smile a lot, but yesterday I just didn't feel like it and that's what I said to the photographer. I just sat there. She tried and tried to get me to smile and even had this bright colored feather-duster thing that she waved around in my face and tried to tickle my toes and neck with. What's up with that!?! Just because I'm a baby people think they can be all in my personal space! But it's alright, because I showed her that I wouldn't do anything I didn't want to do. I got to take some fun pictures with Mommy though. I smiled for those so that we could get one of them to give to Daddy. I think Mom was a bit bummed because I wasn't behaving better so I did give her a few good smiles in the end. She wanted a good picture of me because she thinks I'm the cutest and could win the contest.

But enough of that. After the pictures were done, whew, I felt so happy and smiley and talkative, we went wandering around the mall a bit. Mommy has a pair of crocs that she loves and so she stopped to look at the flip-flop crocs at a free-standing place. I thought they were pretty cool too so I grabbed myself a pair of orange and blue ones in honor of my Auntie Anna who is the best goalie in the world and plays soccer at Covenant - we're hoping they go to Nationals this year so I can go see her play in Kansas City. I was pretty pleased with my choice of shoes and Mommy and I kept walking on (well, Mommy was walking and I was hitching a ride in my stroller). I was really enjoying my new flip-flops and was about to put them to the ultimate test, the Taste Test, when Mommy grabbed them away from me. She said that I couldn't just take things that didn't belong to me and then she made me take them back. Oh well, at least she let us sit down and gave me some yummy "puffs" to snack on before we went home.

PS. Do you like the picture of me? This is my new smile, Mommy and Daddy laugh whenever I do it so I guess it's funny or something.

Blue Eyes

Yes, Joanna still has bright blue eyes. The doctor said that it can take up to a year for her eyes to find the color they're gonna remain. Kirk has brown eyes, I have green so it's kinda wierd for hers to be blue. I kept waiting and waiting for them to change, but now I'm starting to really love her eyes. They are so beautiful.

On another note, sorry my blog is so behind (the side photos/descriptions are still from February). I have no excuse except that last time I tried to update it I messed up my layout and still haven't gotten around to fixing it...and it's so much easier to just play spider solitare when I want to chill at the computer. :)

It wasn't too hard for my mom because I've screamed like that before. I spent all morning at the Botanical Gardens with my friend Maddy and her mom, Aunt Holly Eisenbraun. I even was awake for part of the time. Life is good and I'm almost over my cold.

Just Like Me

Sleepy...at Last
I'm learning a lot about myself (and what it's like for Kirk to be married to me) through my daughter Joanna.
-I LOVE TO SLEEP!
-I LOVE TO EAT!
-I LOVE TO CUDDLE!
-I can only take a small amount of socializing at a time. I have to have time alone to relax and recover before being social again.
-Sometimes I need to have a good cry...just to cry and to be held. I feel most comforted if I have a shoulder to cry on.
-My favorite pillow is Kirk's chest.

Baby Bjorn

baby bjorn
Here's me and Joanna using one of the greatest inventions...a baby bjorn. After two days of feeling like I couldn't get anything done I remembered this gift from my sis-in-law and gave it a try. Wow! How great to be able to use two hands again whilst holding my "attention demanding" newborn. I was even able to go to the market to get fresh fruits and veggies.

We are all doing well despite being exhausted. Sarah is healing well, and Joanna was given a clean bill of health. Please pray that they will both get lots of rest, and pray that Joanna will take well to nursing.

Baby Shower

08-05 203.jpg
I spend this past weekend in Chattanooga. I took Friday off work and drove down there with my good friend Holly Eisenbraun and her 6 month old Maddy. My main purpose in going was to see my youngest sister, Anna, play soccer. She's the goalie for Covenant College's women's soccer team. The Lady Scots had a 3-1 victory over Montreat. Anna didn't get a lot of action but I did get to see a few fantastic saves by her.

Holly took the liberty of making a few phone calls to get a "surprise" baby shower thrown for me. I say "surprise" because I accidently found out about it. But I say that gave me two whole weeks of anticipation. :) So my mother-in-law, Beth Ward, sister-in-law, Amy Meiners, and old friend, Amy Noll put together a wonderful shower. Kirk and I got a lot of great "loot" for our baby and now have all of the essentials and more except for her. (Please note, we will always accept more gifts, especially toys! We're registered at Target and Baby's R Us. ;)) The theme of the shower was safari animals and we got lots of stuff with giraffes on it, my favorite animal.

Pregnancy Brain

I've heard that a pregnant woman's brain does not function quite as effectively or efficiently as a non-pregnant woman's brain. My friend who is currently breat-feeding says the same goes for breast-feeding women (the brain cells are released through the breast milk). Over the past months, I have found the "pregnancy brain" claim to be quite true. This morning was a good example.

I've been drinking chai every morning since it gives me calcium, is warm, and holds over my appetite. I usually make it as I get ready for work and drink it when I get to work. This morning I turned on the water to boil as I brushed my teeth. Then I added the milk as I finished getting ready. I went to pour the chai in my thermos and it was then that I realized my chai was still white (not the usual brown color). Yep, I forgot to add the tea. :)

Room for Baby

preg pics 008.jpg

Here’s our Baby Room in its latest stage of development. Notice the fresh coat of “Soft Yellow” paint. You can also see the changing table which we bought at Goodwill from $45. (By the way, we learned a good lesson through this changing table: when shopping for furniture it is best to use a vehicle that is large enough to bring the stuff home in).

Baby Room

We spent this past weekend with my dad and mom who were in town to visit us and build this wall. The wall turned our hallway/storage area into a nice entryway and a room for our baby off of our bedroom.
